Prepare for REAL ID Enforcement Starting Wed. May 7, 2025

"Are You REAL ID Ready?" is at the top of the image. At the bottom, it reads, "Get Yours by May 7, 2025" and is decorated around it with yellow and black stars and a bear icon. Next to these words is a man holding a floating Minnesota REAL ID driver's license in his hand. The driver's license reads "Evan Scott Sample."

If you’re over 18 and flying domestically on or after May 7, you must use a REAL ID-compliant state-issued driver’s license or ID card, or another acceptable form of identification, to pass through security and board your plane.

  • To determine if your driver’s license or identification card is REAL ID-compliant, look for a star symbol in the upper right corner.
  • If you’re a Minnesota resident, your Minnesota enhanced driver’s license qualifies at REAL ID- compliant and can be used instead. Look for an image of the U.S. flag and the word “Enhanced” at the top of your card.

Once enforcement begins on May 7, travelers who do not have a REAL ID-compliant state-issued credential or another acceptable form of ID can expect delays when they arrive at some TSA security checkpoints. The length of the delay will be determined by the number of other travelers who do not have a REAL ID-compliant credential, or another form of identification accepted by TSA.

Passengers can avoid delays by ensuring their identification credential is REAL-ID compliant or be prepared to present another acceptable form of ID.  TSA has a full list of acceptable forms of identification beyond a state-issued driver license or identification card that can be presented at security checkpoints. Some examples include a U.S. passport and a military ID.

The REAL ID Act, passed in 2005, establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. This is a crucial step towards enhancing national security.

While the TSA has published a final rule allowing for some enforcement flexibilities, the key message remains: be prepared.
