6 Tips to Sleigh Holiday Travel

RST American Airlines Employees

‘Tis the season for jetting off to see loved ones. This year, sleigh the stress of holiday air travel with pro tips from RST’s merry band of elves.

(Elves include American Airlines Station Manager Sean Kelly, Transportation Security Officer Melody Gilbertson, RST Executive Director John Reed and RST Parking Manager Ben Watkins.)

  1. Know some key dates to help you navigate the holiday rush.
    • Dec. 23 is usually the busiest travel day of the holiday season, so avoid booking that date if you’re concerned about crowds.
    • Airlines typically offer fewer flights on Dec. 24, 25, 31 and Jan. 1. Book your flights well in advance if you want to travel any of those days. Booking early can save you money, too!
  2. Complete check-in online or via your airline’s app 24 hours before your flight.
    • It’s always smart to check in early, but especially during the holiday season.
    • Early check-in mitigates your risk of being left without a seat on an oversold flight.
  3. If the weather outside is frightful...
    • Check to make sure your flight is on time before going to the airport.
    • Sometimes airlines will give you the option to change your flight with no additional fee if a major winter storm is forecast. This could allow you to either beat the storm or wait until it has passed. Reference your airline’s app for the timeliest storm-related info.
  4. Relish the gift of departing from a small airport — but still show up early.
    • At RST, you’ll never be sprinting through a huge, crowded airport a la Home Alone. Nonetheless, it’s recommended to arrive 90 minutes before your flight. If you have time to kill, grab a bite to eat or enjoy an espresso or cocktail at our Tailwind Concessions. We also have a new, interactive play space for kids that’ll keep your little ones entertained!
    • When you park your vehicle, double check that your lights are off in and on your car. And keep in mind that If your vehicle doesn’t start after sitting for days or weeks in the Minnesota winter, RST’s operations staff will jumpstart it for free 24/7. Call 507-254-1161
  5. Skip the wrapped gifts (and fireworks)!
    • The Transportation Security Administration screens wrapped items the same as any other items in your checked or carry-on luggage. If a wrapped item triggers the security screening alarm, it needs to be unwrapped to determine if it is a security threat.
    • Consider placing items in a gift bag or gift box for easy access and clearance.
    • Reminder: Your New Year’s Eve fireworks are prohibited from traveling with you!
  6. Maintain your holiday cheer despite challenges.
    • Have a backup plan in case something goes wrong. Consider purchasing travel insurance through your airline or other provider.
    • Pack your patience. Treat fellow passengers as well as airport and TSA employees with respect and courtesy – everyone wants you to get where you’re going for the holidays quickly and safely.

Wishing you smooth journeys and joyous holidays from everyone at RST!
