If you’re immunocompromised, taking some extra precautions can help you stay safe and healthy while in airports and on airplanes. We’ve summarized ten strategies provided to us by Jason Wray-Raabolle, M.D., a Family Medicine physician at Mayo Clinic Health System in Owatonna, Minnesota, that can minimize your exposure to germs and reduce your risk of illness.
1. Consult with Your Doctor:
Discuss your travel plans and any specific concerns you may have. They can provide personalized advice based on your health condition.
2. Stay Up-to-Date on Vaccinations:
Ensure you’re vaccinated against common travel-related diseases, such as influenza, pneumonia, and hepatitis.
3. Consider Travel Insurance:
This can provide financial protection in case of unexpected medical emergencies or trip cancellations.
4. Wear a Mask:
This can significantly reduce your exposure to airborne germs.
5. Practice Good Hand Hygiene:
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.
6. Avoid Crowds:
Whenever possible, try to distance yourself from others, especially in crowded areas like the airport or boarding gate.
7. Stay Hydrated:
Dehydration can weaken your immune system. Drink plenty of fluids during your flight.
8. Wipe Down Surfaces:
Use disinfectant wipes to clean surfaces on your seat, tray table, and armrests.
9. Pack Essentials:
Bring a supply of medications, hand sanitizer, tissues, and any other necessary items.
10. Pack Snacks:
This can help you avoid eating at crowded airport restaurants.
